1996 Nissan Micra S

If a manufacturer were challenged to create the perfect city-car-sized hatchback in 2026, they'd probably still design the K11 Nissan Micra.

The K11 was a game-changer when it hit the scene in 1992, with rounded edges, adorable styling and packaging a few great, revvy little engines.

This example is a particularly rare Micra S 1.0 16v, the first of four facelifts the K11 received in it's 12 year run. Showing just under 77k miles, it's averaged only 2,600 miles a year since new and has clearly been very well cared for in its life.

Outside, the metallic blue paint is in very good shape, and it still sports its original three-spoke plastic wheel trims and wrap-around rear spoiler. It also has body coloured mouldings and mirrors, instead of black plastic, which was an important upgrade once upon a time.

Inside this thing is bright, green and burgundy Aztec patterns are the order of the day, and they put said pattern everywhere. To accent the very bright seats, you also have particularly rare turquoise dials. In terms of luxury, there isn't any: windy windows in the front, pop-out windows in the back, manual mirrors, windy sunroof and no aircon. But it does get a rev counter and heated rear screen, which is something. A previous owner has also kindly added a Bluetooth MP3

Engine-wise, these 1.0 16v units are an absolute dream: revvy, buzzy and so much fun to play with below 60mph (which will take you 15.9 seconds to reach). The 5-speed manual is very tight and gives you the chance to really wrangle with that all-mighty 54bhp. It is a frugal unit though, and will return more than 45mpg easily.

As a first car, a funky grocery getter or someone's easy-to-own pride and joy, the Micra K11 is a firm favourite in the retro car scene for cheap and plentiful parts, bulletproof engines and plenty of room for customisation.
